Prioritising
Prioritising.
Such a commonly used word, yet a task that is so difficult to do!
In 3 of my coaching sessions this week, prioritising came up as an area of challenge.
It can be so overwhelming looking at all the things you have to do and not knowing where to start!
We often get stuck by
• not knowing what to actually prioritise
• not having the strategies to prioritise
I used to get into such a flap because I just couldn’t see what things were more or less important than the other. I would end up doing the ‘easier’ & less important tasks as I couldn’t cope with trying to work out how to face the other ones!
As a perfectionist, I absolutely hated feeling like I had too much to do, I didn’t have time for them all and what I did have time for, wouldn’t be done well.
But I actually learnt that part of prioritising wasn’t just making lists, it was also working on myself and learning to change patterns. I learnt how to let some things go (a bit!) and worry less about certain things.
If you are having difficulty prioritising, you are not alone!
Could you try:
• telling someone who might be able to help you
• write a specific list for each day with timings
• organise tasks into urgent, important but can wait & things that are just nice to do
• working out the things you can worry less about
• delegating work to the right people (this is also a difficult skill!)
• making time for yourself*
*Prioritising yourself is absolutely okay and you shouldn’t feel guilty about it! Making sure that you are getting fresh air, moving and eating well, will help your physical health and mental wellbeing & mindset - which will ultimately help you when making decisions and trying to prioritise!
Have you got any more tips?
